I've always had odd taste in movies. I consider Richard O'brien's 'Shock Treatment' to be one of the greatest films ever made, and I hate 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. So I suppose it's no surprise, with everyone I know putting it down and coming away disappointed, that I really enjoyed the Davinci Code.

I didn't think I would. I went into it expecting to not like it, to find tons of plot holes, bad acting, and a weak and uninteresting plot. Much to my surprise, I found myself sucked into the plot immediately, and I liked the characters quite a bit. Hell, I liked the damn backwards car chase! No, it wasn't an action movie. It was, if anything, an intrigue movie. Some things were easy to see coming, and some things had me blinking and reeling and trying to keep up.

Anyway, I really did enjoy the movie, but can easily see why not many people do. It's a lot of introspection and exposition. It's running from point A to point B to get clues, then on to point C for the clue the first clue told you how to find.

My biggest complaint is the cinematography. It was choppy, loose and half-assed. There were so many opportunities for beautiful, powerful shots that were wasted. And the lighting/filtering of the flashback scenes didn't mesh well at all. But that's a small complaint, really. The plot was one that I highly enjoyed, and I thought the cast was amazing. And hey, any movie that has a cripple that can beat the crap out of an assassinwith his cane wins points in my book. ;)

Overall, I liked the movie and will happily watch it again.

So, I saw X-3.

I loved both X-1 and X-2. I thought they were incredible movies that brought to life the characters I knew and loved. Sure some stuff was changed, but it was okay, because the movies stayed true to the spirit of the X-Men and I could recognize the characters and the world and exclaim 'Yes! That's it!'.

I wish I could say that I felt the same X-3. The things that were changed didn't sit well with me. To the point where some things actually made me angry. Too many new characters were introduced without enough time to focus on them and build up any liking for them. It was wonderful to see Angel and Kitty and all of the rest, but it felt like fans were being pandered to. And besides that, it felt as though the movie wasn't being acted out by characters, but by plot devices on legs. The dialogue came across to me as forced and stilted, with absolutely no heart. There was a decided lack of humor, and what humor was included fell flat for me. And I think it was a mistake to combine two major plots into one - and both with their own little inaccuracies and plot holes.

There were some things I liked about it. Beast was perfect. I have so much love for Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were perfect as always. The special effects were top of the line. The Storm and Callisto fights were very nice to watch.

But overall, it felt like a loosely cobbled together film that lost a lot of the heart of X-Men. Brett Ratner just didn't live up to the expectations I had after the first two X-Men movies.

There may be spoilers in comments, read with caution!
