GUESS WHAT?
I WAS A VICTIM OF IDENTITY FRAUD!
It's funny now, since I got it all straightened out and the 600+ bucks of unauthorized transactions are being taken care of - two taken care of and refunded already, go Paypal and Bank of America! - but it was a very, very stressful afternoon.
It all started when I walked up to the gas station/market - at noon, in the glaring heat, on an empty stomach - to get toilet paper. My credit/checking card was declined. I went 'bwuh?', called my bank, was told by some lazy desk monkey that everything was fine, and went on my merry way. Must have been a glitch in an old card reader, whatever, it's happened to me before.
I finished cleaning, and was heading out to grab hair color - purple! - and styling gel. Again, I was declined. I went 'wtf?!?!?' and called again. I didn't have my account into with me, so I used my SS#. The same thing I'd used earlier. This time I am told they can't pull up my info. I use security questions and my address and card number instead, and find out that there was a typo on my SS#, with a 3 where a 2 should have been. Which made me go 'dumb bitch earlier didn't even look at my account. Whatever. Then I'm told my account is 653$ overdrawn. Without fees. I panicked. The charges were through Paypal. At this point, I didn't even ask what they were, I went right to fraud claims. Filed a claim, got my account frozen and my card deactivated. Went home and got my account info to finish the claim, and to get into Paypal to check and see what was up.
As it turned out, Paypal already was aware - I am assuming Yahoo ate any email they sent me, I really do need Gmail - and had reversed two of the charges.
What were all these charges? The first one was listed as '198$, Santa Hat, Equip'. I kind of stared for a while. Then I checked and saw 'gold mine 150$'. Equipment? Gold mine? Wait a minute....
Yes, some poor and unscrupulous nerd has been buying online game accounts and crap. Over 600$ worth of it.
Can this week get any better?
Imma go color my hair purple now.
