Yet Another HP Pairings Post
Nov. 28th, 2005 09:12 amI know I do these every once and a while, but it's usually triggered by something. So bear with me.
There are tons of people on my Flist who like things that I don't like. In fact, there are people on my Flist who like things that I absolutely loathe. And there are people on my Flist who dislike things that I like. There are people on my Flist who probably loathe things that I like. And that's great. It'd be damn boring if we were all the same. And if anyone wants to have spirited debate on the merits of one pairing vs another, I'm all for it. As long as it's an actual discussion/debate, and not 'how the hell can you like X/Y? What is wrong with you?'. I'm well aware that I like some weird pairings. Narcissa/Lily, anyone? I'm aware that I like some potentially squicky pairings. No one has to read what I write. And there are people on my Flist who write pairings I find squicky or that I find weird. And that's fine. Doesn't change a thing about them.
I don't care what pairings you like. If you like Dobby/Percy/Sock, great. Have fun with it. I'm not going to be reading what you write, but it doesn't make me think any differently of you. If you like Harry/Ginny, great. Enjoy. I won't read what you write, if you write, and I'm not going to give you any more validation then the Dobby/Percy/Sock fan. Why? Because they're just fictional pairings in a fictional book. It's not important enough to blow a gasket over. And I'm certainly not about to take 'sides' im any argument about pairings. Why?
Because I don't care. I don't care if a pairing is canon or not. I don't care if a pairing has justification or not. I don't care if a pairing 'makes sense' or not. People like what they like. In fan fiction, people will write what they write. Be it canon based or not. There is no law that says people need only write exactly what is supported clearly by canon.
I'm always thankful that the majority of my Flist is mature, intelligent, and not obsessed with proving their pairing is the only pairing that should ever be written. Nothing boggles my mind further than the adamant fans who insult anyone who doesn't share their tastes and who spends every moment of their free time focused on 'proving' their preferred pairing. You can turn canon around however you want, really, and in the end it's all open to who sees what.
Some of the pairings I like are canon. Some of them are not. Please don't ask me to 'justify' the pairings I like. I'm more than happy to explain why I like what I like, but I don't need to prove how it's supported in canon. Because chances are, it's not.
And now I'm going to walk away from my computer and thank my lucky stars that there are things in my life more important than what fictional character is hooking up with who.
