When I Grow Up....
Sep. 30th, 2005 10:16 pmI don't know who on my Flist is familiar with the web cartoonist Jeffrey Rowland - Wigu, When I Grow Up and Overcompensation - but I am absolutely in love with his work. I know a lot of it has to do with his attitude on life - it's pretty much the same as mine. Have fun, be yourself, and try not to worry. Just be happy with yourself, and take what life gives you and make it into something you can enjoy and be proud of. The eternal optimism of the little things not mattering and the big things working out and the thing in between taking care of themsleves.
Overcompensating has to be my favorite of his webcomics, and his commentary I enjoy more than the strips. He mixes the silly and nonsensical with the simply profound, and so many times I just find myself thinking 'that's it!' A few examples:
"I've been alive a little while and I have learned some things in that time. Mostly basic things like "pain hurts" and "it feels good when someone scratches my back." These are truths in life!"
"Chocolate wire has benefits over copper wire in that it is more delicious. However it is sort of a crappy conductor. Also being delicious isn't really a benefit when you're speaking in terms of wire."
"Life is too complicated. We need to concentrate on being annoyed with the most basic things and then go from there. If your shoes are uncomfortable, or if go outside thinking you look dorky in that pancho, there is no way you are going to be happy."
"There's also no such thing as "environmentally-friendly." The environment doesn't need friends, because it is the environment. And even if the environment wanted friends, do you really think it would want to be friends with you? I mean, come on, look at you."
"Some things just belong in other places, you know? Life is a puzzle, like Tetris, but faster and juicier."
"I think the reason that animals haven't learned how to talk yet is because people talk to them like they are babies. Whenever I talk to an animal I speak to it in the same manner I would speak to a regular human adult or child. However, I find I have next to nothing to say to the average animal."
I don't know. Just something about him and his writing really appeals to me. I think I will buy his book, because I think I would enjoy it.
Anyway, check out Overcompensating and When I Grow Up, if you're into web comics.
