Quick Writing Question

I was told - back in the Creative Writing Class From Hell - that one of the biggest writing no-nos was having two main/major characters whose names started with the same first letter.

How many other people have heard this rule, and how much of a 'rule' is it really? Because I can think of a bunch of popular books that break it.... *cough*Harry and Hermione*cough*
