I very rarely post anything that has any pertinence to specific pairings, but I was chatting in comments somewhere about the Snape/Lily pairing. It's shot up in popularity since HBP - something I don't quite get, as the only link we see between them is potions - and it's one of those pairings I've never really understood.

But I was giving it a lot of thought, and I remembered how I sort of played it out in an RP once, and began thinking on plausible ways to do it. Or I should say, ways that would seem plausible to me.

My biggest thing with this pairing is that I can't see Snape in love with Lily. I don't see him as really loving anyone at that point. He seemed too full of anger and hate and fear. And I see him as being very put off by what he sees as 'pity' from her. So that, for me, rules out any love.

What I can see, however, is Snape wanting her. Why? Because she's something nice that James has. She's another reminder of all the things that James has that Snape doesn't. She's a trophy, in his eyes, and the crowning glory of James' 'perfect life'. She symbolizes, for him, the culmination of everything he's wanted that was James'. Popularity, looks, wealth, all of it. And on top of that, her blood is even worse than his. If a full blown mudblood can have something like James' love and affection, why can't halfblood Snape? Who, in his eyes, is much more deserving.

That sort of thing, Snape obsessing over Lily because she's James' girlfriend and then wife, sits well with me. It makes sense with how I see Snape. And I can see him going to Dumbledore as all part of some personal plan to steal Lily away from James. Especially once Harry is born, because what better way to stab James than steal away his wife and mother to his son?

That is how I'd like to see Snape/Lily done. I doubt I'll ever write it, as I'm not too fond of the pairing, but that's how it works for me.

An Uncomfortable Revelation. Tonks-centric, 100 words, PG-13, no pairing. I like the idea of Tonks always being embarrassed by her mum growing up, because I see Andromeda as being one of those inappropriate mothers. :D

The challenge was 'Unicorn'.
