And I have the feeling I'm going to end up on fandom_wank. But I don't quite care, because I stand by my statement that it's okay for fans to interpret minor characters how they want with what they have to go by. I don't see Peter as pathetic and inept and sniveling when he was a teenager, but some people do - and that's okay. I don't think that the scene in OotP is enough to make a whole personality from. Nor do I think JKs vague comment that James and Sirius 'let Peter hang out with them' is enough to base an entire character and ten year relationship on, or that I have to let the author dictate how I see the text. If it's not actually written in the books, then I don't necessarily take it as canon. If other people do, that's up to them, and I will happily debate about it. But neither one is 'right' or 'wrong'. I don't say my way is the right way, but it's my right to form my own opinions of a character.
