Murder!

I've been steadily working on 'The Riverman' for my murder class. It's bizarre to read a book where I can identify landmarks in the sense of 'I was just there yesterday'. I think that's what really brings it home, for me. That these things happened not in some other place, not in a city I've just heard of, but essentially right around the corner. It certainly lends a whole nother appreciation of it. I really do need to look into a killer to do my project on. Maybe I'll hit Half Priced Books this week, and sift through the true crime books. Any suggestions?

I have no idea what we'll be going over in class today. Last class we watched a fascinating film on forensic pathology, and next class we're having the homicide investigation speakers come in. I'm really looking forward to that, and hoping I'm able to make it to the class. I've had to cancel far too many things recently.

I have learned that discussing classroom topics is not always a good idea in public. I have never forgotten the horrified and befuddled look the little old lady on the bus gave me when I turned to [livejournal.com profile] nekokoban and casually mentioned 'I'm amazed at how many auto-erotic asphyxiation fatality victims are female'. I just plain don't care what people think of me, and this leads me to having a very thin verbal censor.

As to the murder class, I really can't thank [livejournal.com profile] nekokoban enough for this opportunity.

I'm going to be out this afternoon and this evening. Class and then dinner and drinks with a friend. I'm working on part two of 'Debts', but this whole wizarding medicine thing is making it slow going. There's as much researching as writing!

The Dune miniseries is on Sci-Fi channel tonight. [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu is a huge fan of it, and so it is on since she is miserably sick. And while it is visually stunning, I cannot watch it without my general distaste for the story. And it is a well written story, I just hate allegory with the passionate loathing of a million suns. It grates on me in ways I cannot even begin to explain. I think because when something is so obvious, all I can see is what it's representing. It's the same reason I don't enjoy the Narnia series. I don't like being beaten over the head, and I don't like having my opinion of a story coloured and painted by prior ideas.

It has been a very, very long day. But I have donuts and Pepsi, and am making good progress on my fic. Tomorrow I'm heading out to the market, which is always an enjoyable task. I plan on picking up more lamb sausage, some good cheese and a few other things. I am madly in love with open markets. They have the best produce. The plums down at Pike's are amazing. As are the limes and lemons, both of which we're out of.

There is still sickness in the house, but it's getting better.
