Weekends and Holidays - Hughes/Roy - PG-13
So, I post about these fics I need to write, and what I do? Write a completely random fic.
Title: Weekends and Holidays
Author:
theladyfeylene
Fandom: FMA
Pairing: Hughes/Roy
Rating: PG-13/R
Word Count: 1,333
Spoilers: N/A
Summary: Sometimes, Maes wonders if there really is a future for him and Roy.
Maes Hughes stepped out of the shower room and stretched, a white towel tied casually around his waist. It was nearly ten and he was loose and limber from his shower - the hot water washing away all the soreness and pain from the day’s training. The hallway of the military academy dormitories was empty, and he padded along it in bare feet. Roy should be done with his studying by now….
Maes was rather partial to the idea of sneaking out and getting a few drinks. It was the end of the week, after all. Time to celebrate another five days of making it through training!
Opening the door of the dormitory room he shared with Roy Mustang, Maes grinned and prepared to pounce.
Only Roy wasn’t done studying and Maes found himself suddenly deflated by the serious expression on the other young man’s face.
“Roy, you’ve got to be kidding me. Tell me you’ve got a dirty magazine stuffed into that alchemy book, please!”
“Hmm?” Roy glanced up, his features still set in a mask of concentration. There was no change to his expression, which vexed Maes rather severely.
“Haven’t you been hitting the books a little hard lately?” Maes flopped down on the lower bunk, behind Roy. The towel slipped just a bit, the edge loosening slightly and dipping below one angular hip.
“The state alchemy exams are coming up, I can’t afford to slack off.”
“Clearly,” Maes said, rolling his eyes.
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” Roy glanced over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised.
“Come on! I’m practically naked and stretched out on your bed, and you’re going on about studying. I’m starting to think there’s something wrong with you, Roy.”
“Because my mind isn’t constantly occupied with sex? Some of us do have other interests, Maes.”
“Hey, I don’t always think about sex.” Maes flung his arms out over his head, sighing heavily once more. Maybe if he sighed loudly enough times, Roy would get the hint and call it quits for the night.
“Mmm,” was Roy’s only response, and his attention was already turned back to his alchemy book. Alchemy, alchemy, alchemy. Sometimes Maes got the feeling that that was all Roy ever thought about. He swore that every now and then, when they were getting risky, Roy was tracing transmutation circles on his back. It was starting to get a bit aggravating.
It wasn’t that Maes begrudged Roy his alchemical talent and interest - not at all. He didn’t know the first things about alchemy, but he knew Roy was good at it and had a passion for it. And that was great. But sometimes Maes felt like he was below alchemy on Roy’s list of priorities.
“So… what are you studying?”
If sighing didn’t work, maybe incessant questions and interruptions would. Roy only had so much patience, after all. Enough poking and prodding and he’d get frustrated and give up on his studies.
“Alchemy,” came the clipped and all too obvious response. So Roy was up to playing, was he? Maes grinned.
“Yeah, well, what about it?” he pressed, turning onto his side and propping himself up with his arm. The towel threatened to slip further.
“Nothing you’d understand.”
“Hey!” But Maes grinned. “Look, I’m not gonna leave you alone until you put that book away.”
“You’ll get bored sooner than I will.”
“Do you want me to beg? Is that it? ‘Cause I can, you know.”
“No, Maes, I don’t want you to beg. I want you to leave me to my studying in peace. Once I’ve passed the state alchemy exam, I’ll have more free time.”
And Maes heard the words that ran underneath that sentence. What Roy was really saying was ‘once I’ve passed, I’ll have more time for you’. Maes flopped onto his back once more, staring at the underside of the top bunk.
“You won’t, you know,” Maes said, suddenly and with an oddly serious tone. That got Roy’s attention, anyway.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, once you’re a State Alchemist, you’re gonna have even less free time. You’re gonna be damn busy, Roy, and I am too. You’re gonna be off doing alchemist stuff and I’m gonna be pounding the streets. We’re hardly gonna see each other.” Maes shrugged, an awkward movement as he was lying on his back.
“We’ll make time,” Roy said, quietly.
“So you really think this is gonna last beyond training?” Maes turned his head, fixing curious gold eyes on the other young man.
“I see no reason why it can’t. We simply need to manage our time properly, that’s all. Weekends, holidays…”
Maes sat up, his lips quirked in an expression that clearly said he thought Roy was mad. But Roy’s attention had been taken away from alchemy, at least.
“What?” Roy demanded.
“Weekends and holidays. Not exactly the stuff romance is made of, you know.” Maes leaned back, back propped against the wall.
“We’ll make it work,” Roy said, firmly. He closed his book now and stood, crossing the room to sit between Maes’ legs. “And honestly, Maes, weekends and holidays are all anyone involved with a military man can hope for. You said it yourself: we’re both going to be busy.”
“Yeah…” Maes looped his arms casually about Roy, pulling the smaller man against his chest.
“Is this… upsetting you?”
“I dunno.” Maes shrugged again, and he pressed his forehead against the top of Roy’s head. “Guess I’m just getting nervous about changes, or something.”
“That, or this all some elaborate plan to get me into bed tonight,” Roy countered with an almost playful tone. Maes chuckled and tightened his hold on Roy, as though afraid the smaller man would slip away.
“I guess that could always be a possibility,” Maes teased, kissing the side of Roy’s neck. “But I was serious.”
“I know.” Roy leaned back and settled against Maes, warm and slim and comfortable in his arms. They sat there, twined together in silence for a few long moments. Maes simply enjoyed the feel of Roy against him, and the scent of Roy’s hair. There was a lingering odor of soot and ash about him, a scent that was becoming more and more familiar as the days went by.
“So. Weekends and holidays, huh?” Maes shifted, wrapping his legs around Roy’s waist. The towel finally gave up the ghost, falling onto the bed to be immediately forgotten.
“And lunch breaks, when time and location permits,” Roy added, leaning his head back. Maes took advantage of the movement and ran his lips along the column of Roy’s throat.
“Lunch breaks, too. What a lucky guy I am.” But there was a hint of teasing in Maes’ voice. He supposed Roy had a point. Relationships weren’t exactly easy to carry on when trying to balance a military career. And even though Roy was going into the State Alchemists - Maes had no doubt he’d pass the exams with flying colors - and Maes himself was putting in for investigations, they were still soldiers. Long hours, hard labor and not much free time until the promotions started rolling in.
“Knock it off,” Roy mumbled, twisting and pressing his backside firmly against Maes. “You have what you want, you could at least stop souring the mood.”
“I’m not souring anything!” Maes tilted Roy’s head and caught his friend’s lips with his own, exchanging words for heady kisses and clumsy caresses. They fell back onto the narrow bed together, awkwardly tangled and moving against one another. They were all arms and legs and grasping hands. It felt as though it had been too long, since they were able to do more in bed together than just sleep. With Roy’s fierce studying, it seemed as though they could only catch a few hours together on the weekends…
Chuckling softly against the arch of Roy’s hip, Maes decided that maybe he didn’t have anything to worry about as far as the future went after all.

How awesome was that? :-3
Sorry for taking up so much space with this comment, but reading your fic made me really happy :D For me, it's all the little lines - one here, one there, etc, that really pull a story together, and you did that so well.
Thanks for sharing~
