In Spirit - FMA Drabble
For
littleduchess, who requested some Al and Izumi interaction with the prompt
'mother'.
Title: In Spirit
Author:
theladyfeylene
Fandom: FMA
Pairing: N/A
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Episodes 30+
Word Count: 300 exactly!
Summary: There were some things that came naturally, without thinking. Things a mother would do...
“Alphonse…”
“I’m sorry, Teacher!” Alphonse Elric straightened immediately, like a soldier called to attention. His clothing was torn and stained, and there was a scratch on one cheek. He and Edward had been rough housing again, it looked like. Izumi sighed and pressed her fingers to her forehead. What was she going to do with these boys?
“Come here, Alphonse.”
The boy took a few trembling steps towards her, as though afraid. Izumi knelt down and reached into her pocket. She pulled out a handkerchief, a clean one, and spit into it without a thought.
“Here.” Her expression still stern, Izumi wiped away some of the grime and blood that clung to Alphonse’s cheek. “You’re going to upset the neighbors, looking like a street urchin.”
“I’m sorry, Teacher,” Alphonse repeated, squirming slightly as Izumi gripped his chin. She pulled away the handkerchief and nodded, as though satisfied with her work.
“Mmm. Go get cleaned up and changed for dinner. You won’t be allowed to sit at the table looking like that. And if your brother is in a similar state…”
“I’ll tell him!” Alphonse assured her, standing at attention once more. He was so serious sometimes, the younger Elric. Izumi nodded again and the handkerchief disappeared back into her pocket. It would be tossed in with the other dirty laundry after dinner.
“Teacher…” Alphonse said, half turned away from her. Izumi sighed.
“What is it, Alphonse.”
“Nothing…” He looked over his shoulder at her, small cheeks flushed and expression almost sheepish. “It’s just… you’d make a really good, mom, that’s all.”
Izumi only nodded, her expression not changing as Alphonse grinned and jogged up to the house. Once he was gone, she finally allowed a small flicker of pain to cross behind her eyes.
But only that, and nothing more.

I really like how you've written this so simply, and understated. It reflects her character very well- so much more below the surface.
So very happy with your take on this!

Thank you, very much! I'm so glad you enjoyed!

You really know how to capture children!
no subject
Which is the strangest thing, since I am not often around them nor do I have any clue how to interact with them!
