Author Commentary For Momoiro_usagi
I've only had a couple requests, so feel free to comment for more author commentaries. :D
This was the first Envy/Sloth I ever wrote. I'd toyed with the idea of the pairing for a long time, and on New Year's eve I was grabbed by inspiration for it.
What I really wanted to play with in that fic was the core of Envy. We see in the series how much he hates Hohenheim and Ed, but nothing's shown about how he feels towards Sloth. She was, once, the woman that Hohenheim 'left' Dante and Envy for. She's the mother of what Envy sees as his greatest rival. I felt that there had to be some feelings there, and I wanted to really dig deeply into them.
The most obvious theme that comes across in that fic is possession. Trisha had 'belonged' to Hohenheim, Sloth would belong to Envy. By starting with what's essentially a blank canvas, Envy can erase all traces of Hohenheim and take away from him something dear. It's the basic core of envy - wanting what others have. This is Envy's chance to 'have' Trisha, in the form of Sloth.
On another level, there's something twistedly Oedipal about the Envy/Sloth relationship. As we see in the series, Envy responds and listens to two characters: Dante and Lust. Clearly, Envy responds better to women than to men. Considering the abandonment issues he feels, this isn't surprising. He doesn't listen to Sloth, however. In fact, he ignores her orders and attempts to control her himself. He seeks to dominate Sloth in a way he doesn't with Lust. Sloth isn't any weaker than Lust - in fact I think it's safe to say she's one of the strongest of the homunculi - but he still treats her differently. Because she is Sloth, but she is still Ed's mother and Hohenheim's wife.
The entire fic is the claiming of Sloth by Envy. That need to take and have and possess that makes up so much of Envy's character. It deals with both Envy the homunculus and envy the sin itself - and how the latter really does influence the former.
The title comes from a Nightwish song that I was listening to at the time, and is a bit of a play on words. Barely cold in her grave, referring to the fact that Trisha was killed and revived not too long after, barely warm in his bed to refer to Sloth, a cold and dead thing, being taken to Envy's bed immediately. It embraces the dual nature of Sloth and Trisha, the complete combined creature that Envy sees Sloth as.
It was also the first NC-17 het I wrote for FMA.
