Halloween Ficlet!

So, Nija gave me the prompt of 'L sets up his cameras in one of the hotels he and Naomi are staying for precautionary purposes and ends up witnessing some paranormal activity. Of course he has to investigate it.' And I ended up writing a ficlet on that premise! It's just a little snippet, really, but hey, I wrote something!

Title: At The Foot of the Bed
Fandom: Death Note
Characters: Naomi and L
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Author's Note: Just another ficlet form my AUverse!
Summary: Naomi didn't appreciate being woken up in the middle of the night, and certainly not to appease L's boredom. And trying to scare her with ghost stories was a low point, even in their naturally teasing relationship...

Naomi was awoken from a sound sleep by the ringing of a telephone somewhere near her ear. Groaning, eyes only half open, she flung out her arm to pick up the offending receiver.

“’lo?” she slurred, still lying in bed, wondering why the hell a hotel phone was ringing at whatever’o’clock at night. Especially when Ryuzaki was in the next room over, and there was no case to be worked on.

“Naomi? Are you fully awake?”

“No,” she answered, honestly. Struggling, she sat up in bed, raking her hair out of her face. What did Ryzuaki want? It was…1 AM. 1 Am and they were supposed to be on vacation. That meant a distinct lack of 1 AM phone calls.

“There is a small matter I need you to settle for me,” Ryuzaki went on. “Is there a draft in your room?”

“A what?” Naomi was having difficulty wrapping her mind around what Ryuzaki was asking. “No, the windows are closed…”

“I see.”

There was silence on the line for a moment. Naomi rolled her eyes heavenward, waiting for Ryuzaki to either say more or let her get back to sleep.

“Thank you for your clarification. I apologize for waking you.”

Naomi grunted something in return, hung up the phone, and flopped back down into bed.

Ten minutes later, the phone rang again.

“What?”

Naomi managed to sound slightly more awake.

“I apologize for waking you once again, but I have another question.”

“What is it?”

“Are there any lights on in your room?”

“No.” What the hell was Ryuzaki on about? Was he really this bored without a case to work on? She’d thought a vacation would be nice - for both of them. Ryuzaki did nothing but work, and she had developed that same habit. It was enough to drive a person mad.

So she’d dragged Ryuzaki off for a weekend in a remote old mining town. They had a five star hotel, after all. One of those big old numbers, that used to be a prison or a hospital or something. Full of local color. And there were a few unsolved deaths floating around, from the last century. Ryuzaki would have plenty to do.

Apparently, she’d made a bad call.

“What about outside?”

“What about outside?” she repeated.

“Lights, Naomi. That could reflect into your room causing an anomaly to appear on camera.”

“….Ryuzaki?”

“Yes, Naomi?”

“What have we talked about? About cameras in my room?”

“They are precautionary measures.”

“We’re on vacation.”

“That is irrelevant.”

Naomi sighed and hauled herself out of bed, snatching up a robe and wrapping it tightly around herself. She looked out the window and saw nothing but darkness. No lights, not even a moon to make some sort of reflection.

“No lights,” she confirmed. “What’s going on?”

“There appears to be some form of camera malfunction.”

“What kind of camera malfunction?” And why was Ryuzaki watching her room in the middle of the night, anyway?

“An anomaly appeared on screen. It disappeared when the telephone rang, however. Perhaps some passing distortion…”

“Okay.”

“I shall keep an eye on the cameras. If I notice anything further…”

“Tell me about it in the morning,” Naomi said. She was tired. It was late. And since it was clear that Ryuzaki wasn’t going to elaborate unless she drew it out of him, Naomi just told him goodnight and hung up once more. She made a mental note to look into getting new cameras if the current ones were going screwy. Displaying ‘anomalies’.

For all she knew, Ryuzaki was just having his own form of fun. She wasn’t an idiot. She knew what he was trying to imply. Old hotel, lots of mysterious deaths, tragic history…

But she was a logical and grounded woman, and despite the fact that Halloween was around the corner and there was that feel in the air, Naomi didn’t believe in ghosts. Neither did Ryuzaki, she was rather certain, but he wasn’t above teasing her to get a rise out of her.

She doubted he’d be above playing a prank on her either, in his boredom.

Involuntarily, Naomi pulled the covers up over her head before attempting to go to sleep again.

In the morning, after her shower, Naomi headed over to Ryuzaki’s room. She was doing some sight seeing that day, and figured she’d invite him along. She didn’t expect him to join her, but she could still make the offer.

He was hunched over his laptop when she came in, feet tucked under him and thumb at his lips.

“Morning,” she offered, a room service menu in her hand. “Breakfast?”

“Mmm. I believe you should look at this, Naomi. It would be of great interest to you.”

“I’ll call it in.” She glanced over his shoulder, to see what he was working on. It was footage from her bedroom, she assumed from the night before. There was her room, and her bed - complete with a Naomi shaped lump under the covers. Nothing interesting, save further proof of Ryuzaki’s voyeuristic tendencies.

But what she saw when Ryuzaki casually moved to another timestamp made her blood run cold.

At the foot of her bed, leaning over her sleeping form, there stood a white, luminescent figure. It held something in its hand, something Naomi couldn’t quite make out….

“Were you aware,” Ryuzaki asked, calmly, “that a former resident of that room hung himself?”

“No.”

“Ah. I was reading up on the local folklore. Apparently it’s believed the doomed man still inhabits the room. And has been reported to engage in sinister and violent acts against guests. Would you be agreeable to switching rooms this evening? I would like to investigate this matter personally.”

Naomi’s eyes were still on the screen, watching that ghostly figure that may or may not be real - it was easy enough to add effects to video footage - but she nodded. That thing in its hand did look a whole lot like a rope….

“Knock yourself out,” she muttered. She didn’t believe in ghosts, but if Ryuzaki wanted to get his kicks by trying to unsettle her, he was welcome to. He needed something to do, after all.

It was just an elaborate prank.

Probably….

She’d keep an eye on the cameras. Just in case.

I love their interactions so much, and you write them so well. And Jerome = awesome. I wonder if Naomi would point out that halloween decoration we saw there the last time and make some sort of Joke about it being him if he keeps working so hard. <3

Also on a different matter. Thank you for the soup! ^-^
