Cosplay Construction Question and Con Babble

I'm making a list of all my cosplay sewing projects. There are two that are going to take me a good deal of time to get done - one the sewing, one the making of the accessories. Speaking of accessories, making armor/jewelry type stuff. What's the best material to make it out of? I'm going to be doing Lamika, from Vampire Hunter D, and she has this elaborate collar necklace and headpiece thing. Gold. Any tips?

ALSO! [livejournal.com profile] chaneystarr! Tunic! Color? And [livejournal.com profile] ranchangrnl, did you want me to do a tunic for you, too? I know the con's not until August, but I like to be organized about this stuff.

After a lot of conversations on [livejournal.com profile] cosplay, I've been realizing why I go to cons. There are three major reasons, excluding the obvious of 'hanging out with friends'.

1) Cosplay. It makes me feel good when strangers want to take a picture of me. There is no greater ego-boost than cosplaying, in my experience.

2) Autographs. I love meeting VAs and getting autographs. I have a lovely collection that is ever-growing.

3) Dealer's room. I am a consumer whore. I love paraphernalia and memorabilia. My action figure collection alone is an epic testament to this. I am a collector in the truest sense, and my collections are always expanding.

I'm not really a panel person. I mean, I like going to VA panels, but that's about it. And only if it's a VA I really like. Out of all the dozens of conventions I've been to in my life, I've attended maybe...five panels. Ted Raimi's panel years and years ago, the Farscape panel at that disastrous Comic Con trip, Colleen Clinkenbeard and Sonny Straight's panel at Anizona two years ago, and Laura Bailey's panel at Anime Vegas. Okay, so four panels. Out of more conventions than I can count.

I've been wondering about this, since panels are such huge con things. Maybe it's because I started with Rebelcon, which didn't really have panels. The actors were just there, hanging out with guests. I didn't need to go to panels to hear them, I could just sit down and talk with them and ask them any questions I had like that. In one instance, I sat in their lap. So when I started the con thing, it was very relaxed, and very much just a gathering of like-minded people all hanging out in the dealer's room. There weren't events. Or if there were, it was in the dealer's room in a corner and you could just wander over and watch while you shopped or whatever. That? Was pretty much it.

I've only recently started going to anime cons, which are insanely different than what I'm used to. And when I did Anizona for the first time, I did it how I generally did cons. I hung out in the dealer's room, or on the hotel patio pouring over swag. [livejournal.com profile] lennaofmidearth and I didn't really do much, because we just weren't used to it. We hit a panel, and we watched the AMV contest since she's a vidder. And we posed for pictures, which was something extremely new to us - I'd dressed up for cons before, but never had people ask for pictures. Oh, and went to the dance, because we both love dancing. But then Creepy Guys came out, and we went back to the room. And of course, we drank. Hey, there were free drinks! Free strong drinks. That started my tradition of getting drunk in cosplay. :D

AniZona last year was...pretty much the same thing. It was mostly just hanging out. Hell, half the time we weren't even at the con-proper. I probably spent the majority of the con in the hotel room or at the designated smoking area. And there was much Wandering Around Mesa. Anime Vegas? Again, primarily the Dealer's Room and not-the-con. But the thing is... I have fun doing it this way. Like, a lot of fun. Anizona last year? Was some of the most fun I've had at a con.

For me, cons are basically like our Halloween Jerome trip, just with a dealer's room.

Same. Cosplay is one of the major reasons I go to cons. I love attention. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I like it when people notice me. And getting your picture taken feels good.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! There's no shame in admitting it. I love being noticed, I love having my picture taken, I love feeling good about myself like that. It's the major thing I look forward to at conventions!

ALSO! There was an advert for L: Change the WorLd in this month's issue of γ‚ŠγΌγ‚“. XD I thought of you.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwahahahaha. I...will so watch it. Just because. I mean, people are already pairing his rival/girlfriend/whateversheis up with Naomi....

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Anything that results in more Naomi yuri cannot be completely bad in my books!

[identity profile] colortheory.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. XD

Also: Are you a Tenchi fan, by any chance?

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even know what Tenchi is! :D

[identity profile] colortheory.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
XD Never mind, then.

[identity profile] ex-talia-sp.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you wanna be technical, you could say that our lame roam around Jerome and spending gobs of money at the candy store like the dealer hall.

I am very much looking forward to getting drunk again with you at PCC. We have such interesting conversations when we are trashed.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, yes! Oh, but such delicious candy!

YES! WE MUST IMBIBE ALCOHOL!

[identity profile] ex-talia-sp.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
w00t!!

Did you get that message I sent you about the pictures?

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Got and replied - LJ seems to be spazzing, though, as I'm getting comment notifications ten minutes after I get the comments.

My reply was don't mind at all, feel free!

[identity profile] ex-talia-sp.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankies!

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

On topic, I hear what you're saying (minus the cosplay thing, natch). At comic cons I'm all about the autographs and the swag. Panels are kinda fun, but it's more fun to make my own program, how I want it, on the spot. Keep it loose, ya know? XD

God I wish there was a con we could actually go to together.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahah! :D

YES! That's the best way to do cons.

Actually, in August, I'm going to be in your area for a con....

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, unless my geography is horribly off. I'm going to Otakon in Baltimore.

[identity profile] attilatehbun.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
O___O

These are the things you are supposed to be telling me!!!!

So we're going to get completely drunk together, right? Right?

eeeeeeeeeeee

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I JUST MADE THE PLANS LAST NIGHT!

BUT OF COURSE! If you want to hang out, I can just...not fly back right after the con, and we can chill and shit. I mean, since I'm going to be staying less than an hour's drive away from you....

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
UMM! I DON'T KNOW! What do you think? What goes good with red? Hahaha!

And I'm hoping Otakon will be fun. Well, WE'LL have fun. XD I haven't been there in a few years and I know it's big, but yeah, I go for the cosplay and the dealer's room and Artist's Alley. The first few years they showed anime I hadn't seen before, so we used to sit in on them, but now I've seen everything they play, or I had no desire to see, haha. So I go to shop and be in costume and goof off with friends. XD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue is generally a good one.

I AM SURE IT WILL BE! WE WILL BE HANGING OUT TOGETHER, HOW COULD IT NOT BE FUN?

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking! A lighter blue, though. I don't think I'd look good in dark blue. Maybe. Hmm. I DON'T KNOW YOU PICK. I think I have to tan for her, too.

DOES IT MATTER THAT I DON'T HAVE POINTY EARS?

I DON'T KNOW, WE WILL MAKE IT FUN! Besides, Cath's insane enough that it's always an adventure *coughs*

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE AND THEREFOR I CANNOT SAY!

I CAN PROVIDE THOSE! http://www.aradanicostumes.com/elfears.php <- the first choice, small elf ear. Perfect for a halfblood!

OF COURSE WE WILL! I have no doubts whatsoever!

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
UMM I CAN SEND PICTURES but I don't know if that will help >.>

OOOH, I can manage those, thank you! XD

Hahaha, me either, we'll have fun. XD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be very helpful in picking fabric, actually! AND SINCE I WILL NEED PICS OF YOU GUYS ANYWAY!
:D
You're welcome! I'm getting the large ones. :D

SO MUCH FUN!

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The half-elf ones are perfect! XD I'll nab them for me and Cath. XD

I WILL SEND YOU SOME. As soon as I find some to send you...

I CAN'T WAIT! XD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think [livejournal.com profile] chocomimi found them! YAY!

OKAY AWESOME! And...you know what I look like!

NEITHER CAN I! WHY MUST IT BE SO FAR AWAY?

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I DO! I have pics of you. XD I will have to get a camera before August so I can take more! XD

I DON'T KNOW, BUT AT LEAST I'LL HAVE MONEY BY THEN!

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so very easy to recognize. YES GET CAMERA! I need to get a better memory card for my camera!

THAT IS A VERY VALID POINT!

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I PLAN ON IT! XD

IT IS! Considering I am very very broke at the moment, hahaha. XD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
OKAY AWESOME!

Stupid monies. I highly encourage a return to the trade system.

[identity profile] firebird-88.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, I wish I've had as much con experience as you have. XD (Sitting in people's laps and getting drunk while cosplaying sounds AWESOME. :D) Personally, I love the whole hanging-out feel of some conventions. There's no pressure to be cool and you can just wander around and talk to some of the coolest people. ^^

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of it is just because of the cons that existed when I started doing them. Which was...well over ten years ago. They were very intimate, very familiar, very friendly. That's how I like my cons.

I hit Comic Con one year and it was hands down the worst con experience ever. Massive, cold, unorganized, extremely unfriendly towards the handicapped.... Screw huge cons, as far as I'm concerned.

[identity profile] zalia.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds pretty much like what I do at cons ^^; The UK cons don't even have panels really and even at last Y-con, I spent most of it sitting in the lobby chatting with friends, or in the Dealers room or in hotels rooms playing board games. I go to see my friends and be fannish, rather than spend time in panels.

I totally agree with you about cosplay. I love it ^^ I like dressing up in a lovely costume and having people want to see me and take photos. It feels really nice to be appreciated like that!!
