There's Got To Be a Hogfather!

So, last night and the night before, some local station - ION? - was airing the BBC live action Hogfather miniseries. This is vastly amusing to me, because day before yesterday while I was wrapping presents, we had six or seven wild pigs wander into the yard. With the snow and the boar-like critters, my mother made the joke that the Hogfather had stopped by early.

Then the miniseries comes on. I watched it. And...holy crap, I was impressed. Most of the dialogue was lifted word-perfect from the book. The characters? Looked like Josh Kirby's artwork. Especially the wizards. The acting was brilliant, Mr. Teatime was brilliantly disturbing, Susan was hot as all hell, and all in all it was just incredibly done. Does anyone know if this is available on DVD? Also, I've heard they're also doing Colour of Magic?

(And yes, I know the sad news about Terry Pratchett, but he's optimistic, so I am, too!)

Today I am baking eggnog cookies and a raspberry truffle cake. Assuming I can find my spring pan. If not, I shall check Nanny Ogg's cookbook and see if there's any Hogswatch recipes in there. :D

And does anyone know any good file sending sites for large (over 300MB) files? Megaupload hates me. :/

I am so mad -- I missed it when it aired in the UK in July. I was there when it was on but for some reason, SkyTV stopped working in our room for the precise days it was on. I saw it was on last night and went to watch it -- only to discover that it was part 2 and I'd missed the first part on Tuesday. Unfortunately, I've read very little Terry Prachett (other than Good Omens) and had no clue what was going on. I may have to buy it on dvd if it ever comes out. I was so annoyed that there was basically NO advertising for it anywhere.

Oh that sucks! I missed it when it was on last week, and it was random chance I found it was on this week. One of my shows was a repeat, so I checked the TV Guide station and saw it going around and had a mini-spaz. My mother didn't find out until last night, and it was the same thing - the second part. She's read the book, but she wanted to see it from the beginning, so I want to get it for her for Christmas. Rumor has it Barnes and Noble has a special edition DVD out.

I definitely recommend the books, though! Small Gods, Guards Guards, Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music are good ones to start with.

I had no idea that it was on last week too! There wasn't even anything on on Tuesday but I've been watching UK shows I've been hoarding (hooray for a multi-region dvd player) and didn't even think to check the listings. It was just 'oh, right, no House, I'll go watch some other stuff'. Last night, I just happened to notice Hogfather in the tv guide and went 'yay'. I tried to watch part 2 not knowing it WAS part 2 and then they showed some promo thing which said it...and I checked and...*pouts* It also explains why I didn't really understand what was going on.

I have a few Discworld books that I bought in the UK about 5 years ago. I just have to find where I put them!

Apparently it was! My sister came over for dinner and mentioned she'd seen it on the TV Guide station, but it was the second half. I ended up watching it this week because House was a repeat, and caught it when it was only a couple minutes in.

Oh, awesome! They really are amazing books. I've got the whole series, all the special companion books, the two animated movies on DVD....

Me, too. Isn't he so wonderful? ♥Pterry♥

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He is! And mind over matter is so important, that I know he's going to be on top of this thing for as long as humanly possible.

I am VERY impressed with most of the stuff coming out of the BBC. It seems if it is not very close to the original, it has the spirit of the original. LOL I love their Cassanova (Russel T Davis is brilliant)and Pride and Prejudice.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only caught this one, and only because I'm such a massive Pratchett/Discworld fan. But it was perfect! Exactly like the book!

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt that way about Pride and Prejudice, it was bloody perfect. Cassanova made me laugh my ass off. Dramatic but very cheeky in the sense of not taking itself seriously. I like Horn Blower too. Ok they took a ton of liberties with it, but they did an awesome job projecting the spirit of the books. And Horatio was SPOT on as was Bush.

But I'm happy to see they're carrying on the tradition with other Books. I cringed at the latest MGM production of Pride and Prejudice. I MEAN they altered the Regency costumes to fit the skinny minies (which is not realistic for the time) playing the lead roles. LOL I am so ANAL with my costumes though!

I refused to see that latest P&P travesty, but from what I gather, they decided to make it a generation earlier - those were GEORGIAN costumes.

Shudder.

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh dear, that is SAD. It really bothers me when they screw with a amazing book.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if there was any reason why they changed it. I mean, it doesn't seem to me like it would be that terribly difficult to set it in the appropriate time period with the appropriate costumes. Though they probably just thought it wouldn't make a difference. :/

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the latest P&P myself. It always bothers me when period clothing is altered or changed - taking the wrong historic fashions - because they refuse to cast realistically period shaped women for the roles. This whole super skinny fad? Pretty damn recent. *rolls eyes*

I caught some movie or something not too long ago, that was set in the Renaissance in Italy, and I was so thrilled to see they had actual larger actresses playing the wealthy women.

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nice. I wish we would see it more often. Film makers seem to forget painting of various time periods show women as more "full figured" than these skinny things we see in the current films.

P&P should have had Kate Winslet and Not Kira Knightly in it. Kira Knightly is TOOOO skinny for a woman from the early 19th century.

The BBC version the ladies looked like they were pulled from a painting of that time. Which is fantastic.

Cassanova, they didn't even try to be accurate, it was more like a stage production. VERY surreal. It was more like you were seeing the world from Cassanova's point of view, which was like brightly colored and larger than life. Very surreal. But it worked with the atmosphere of the film. And OK, I'm guilty the threesome scene with the sisters, that was bloody brilliant! It did sex wonderful! Naughty very very naughty!

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Kiera Knightly is too skinny for a woman from this century! Every time I see her, I just want to strap her down and force feed her a sandwich! I liked her so much better when she looked like an actual human. Of course, my ideal of feminine beauty is Kirsten Vangness, so.... *points to icon*

That is so awesome.

Huh, that sounds really, really good. Do you know if I could find a download link anywhere? I think I'd like to see this film. And, uh, not just for the naughty parts. Really. ;)

Oh I LOVE Kirsten Vangnees and I feel the same way about Kiera (yay! I spelled her name right!).

She's a goddess. Seriously. Most gorgeous woman on television, hands down.

Oooh, thanks!

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh she is. She's the reason WHY I started to watch Criminal Minds. I LOVE just LOVE the way she dresses! It's sooo CUTE!

Welcome. And have fun. It's very very fun, very anime like too, I thought of the Irresponsible Captain Tyler when I watched it.

It's not available the US on dvd, but my girlfriend somehow managed to get the UK version on a dvd that will play in American dvd players. I'm pretty sure one of her friends put it together for her, so I'll see what I can do about getting a copy of it for you. I saw it for the first time last week while on vacation, though I've never read the book. It was entertaining. I love Death.^^

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-15 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that would be freaking awesome! The books are kick ass, seriously. I recommend them to absolutely everyone. Death is made of awesome and win - Reaper Man and Soul Music are other examples of his ultimate awesomeness. :D

What's going on with Terry Prachett? *wide eyes*

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2007-12-15 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He was diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's. But he is very positive, and doesn't intend to let it beat him!

Oh, man.

God, that's one of the worst disease to get.
