What would anyone have to celebrate in the middle of winter?

After the longest night of the year, they celebrate the return of the sun, and the knowledge that spring will come soon. And it's an excuse to give gifts to one's friends.

It sounds like something from one of those dead human religions. What's the point of giving gifts? And... why in the name of the ancestors would Renji want to give me anything?

You give people you care about gifts because it makes them happy, which makes you happy. And don't ever tell him I told you, but Renji likes you. He thinks you're a good kid.

He really doesn't have to. Gift giving has very certain connotations in my culture. It wouldn't be right.

I would hope that manner of thing wouldn't come up in conversation. The only time elves ever give gifts to one another is if there's a marriage involved, or if favor is desired from someone more powerful.

I should hope so, considering I doubt he wishes to curry favor, and I'm certain he has no desire to make me his bride.

Well, maybe look at it from his perspective. If he gives you a present, it's because he wants you to enjoy it and be a little happier.
