On Dubs....

So, after all errands, cooking and cleaning were done, I decided to actually watch some of my new DVDs.

I'd already seen the first episode subbed, and I liked it quite a bit. Abel's voice fits him perfectly, and the VA is very skilled at doing the two different Abel voices - normal Abel and Krusnik!Abel. Catherina sounds exactly like Sloth, which is still jarring. But! The voice suits the character, I think. Catherina is a cold, aloof, manipulative woman. The voice matches that personality.

I was most interested in hearing Esther's dub voice. But before I get into that, I want to talk about Tres - the english VA does a much better job of getting across the point that Tres is a robot. He speaks mechanically without it being stiff. I am very impressed.

Esther - I bow down once again before the amazingness that is Colleen Clinkenbeard. I can hear shades of Rose in Esther, but that makes sense. Colleen manages to get all of Esther's desperation and underlying hope into her voice. She's seriously amazing.

I'm also impressed with Allesandro's voice. I love his childlike innocence and just confusion, and the VA imparts that beautifully. All in all, the dub flows very nicely and I think it's one of the best dubs out there. All the emotion and subtlty is clearly expressed in dialogue, and it doesn't feel like anything's been lost.

I love dubs. We know this. I make no secret of it.

Now, I've only seen one episode, so I don't want to be too hasty in my judgement. But... well, so far I'm not impressed. Kantarou's voice is too deep for me. It doesn't seem to fit him at all. It just sounds... too serious and gruff. Also, hearing his name pronounced with the stress on the second syllable keeps throwing me. I'm used to it being pronounced with the stress on the first syllable instead. The inflections and whatnot are good enough, and I can tell the VA is definitely trying to capture Kantarou's personality and character, so credit for effort at least. Hopefully as the series progresses it gets better. Or I'll just get used to it, whichever.

Youko's voice, while throwing - if the Tactics dub was on in the other room, I'd probably get confused and think someone was watching FMA, because she sounds exactly like Wrath - is much better than Kantarou's. It's high, it's light, the VA does a good job with voice fluctuations and Youko's frustrated scenes. It's going to take me a bit more to warm up to it, I think, but I'm not unhappy with it.

Haruka.... wow. I'm actually really impressed with Haruka's voice. He sounds properly arrogant, aloof and distant. And there's power in his voice. I have no complaints there whatsoever. And I will give Kantarou's VA this: he managed to get the emotion in his voice for when the two first meet. I was pleased there. I just wish he wouldn't pronounce Haruka so that it rhymes with Veruca.

I haven't heard Sugino yet, and I'm kind of afraid to. All in all... it's going to take me some time to get used to this one. Especially the previews. Oh my god, I want to kill the episode preview voice over. :/ But it will help me as far as writing goes, as I'll have a better grasp of speech pattern.

And those are my thoughts on the Trinity Blood and Tactics dubs. I'll do follow-ups as I see more episodes and reach the introductions of other characters.
