En Prise - Kyouya/Haruhi - PG-13

I have been ridiculously unproductive today. But I have some ficcage! Tomorrow I should be posting another RO story, as well.

Lookit! Fey's writing multi-chaptered fic again! Just posting here in my journal for now, will crosspost when it's all complete. I was bunnied like crazy after watching episode 23 of Ouran. Hunny and Mori's conversation at the end sent me into spasms of joy.

Title: En Prise* - Chapter One
Author: [livejournal.com profile] theladyfeylene
Pairing: Eventually Kyouya/Haruhi
Rating: PG-13 for now
Spoilers: Up to episode 23
Word Count: 1,643
Summary: Kyouya has never been a man to let opportunities pass him by, never been one to ignore an opening. And an unguarded queen was a queen waiting to be captured....

Kyouya had never been one to believe in the fairness of life - life didn’t owe anyone anything. Hard work was rewarded. Opportunities were there to be seized and taken, whenever they presented themselves. The man who let them pass by was a fool, and the man who was blind to them was to be pitied. Which was why Kyouya watched Haruhi across the room without guilt.

Haruhi was an opportunity. She waited to be seized, a chance that was offered to them all. And yet no one had made a single serious move. Kyouya had refrained, certain that Tamaki was only moments away from pouncing on the girl and hauling her off into some fairy-tale romance.

But that wasn’t the case. Tamaki didn’t even realize what was before his eyes - or in his own mind for that matter. With that knowledge, Kyouya saw no reason not to make his own move. It wasn’t as though he was stealing her away from his rather exuberant friend. Tamaki held no claim, had no right to cry foul. And the idea of either of the twins…

No. The time had come for Kyouya to seize the moment and lay hands to the opportunity that presented itself. Though he knew there were obstacles - Haruhi’s commoner status being one of them - he had never been one to shy away from a challenge. Certainly not when the reward was as high as it was.

Perhaps his interest in Haruhi was more clinical than romantic, but he had never been one given to fits of fancy. Romance was all well and good, but it was nothing more than sugar frosting. Sweet and delicate and pleasing to the palate, but lacking any substance. Haruhi had substance in abundance.

Still, he needed to be cautious. The twins were quick to turn to sabotage, especially in the name of preserving Haruhi’s ‘purity’. And Tamaki was simply an emotional wreck when it came to the girl. Any whisper that he was moving in on Haruhi would be met with opposition and dissention among the ranks. This needed to be handled delicately and discreetly - and Kyouya was skilled in both discretion and delicacy.

He scanned the club room. Hunny and Mori were at a table near the door, Mori watching while Hunny devoured sweet after sweet. Tamaki was in some sort of argument with the twins, arms waving frantically while the brothers looked on, grinning deviously. Haruhi was alone, the others occupied. Now was the time to make his move, if he wished to do so without any eyes upon him. The barest hint of what he was doing would ruin all of his carefully laid plans.

Adjusting his glasses, Kyouya rose from his seat and crossed the club room. She was a fascinating creature, this Fujioka Haruhi. Brilliant and humble, insightful and blunt, dedicated and driven. There was no bothersome female frippery about her, something Kyouya appreciated. As pleasing to the eye and as good an economical match as Renge was, Kyouya simply couldn’t stand her simpering and her carefully cultivated feminine wiles. He wanted an equal partner, not a decoration to tote about at events.

“Haruhi? May I have a word?”

“Eh?” Haruhi glanced up, her expression mild. No one seemed to notice him as he approached her, too wrapped up in their own small dramas. Good.

“I have a small request,” Kyouya went on. “One I am willing to lower your debt for, if you agree.”

“Lower my debt?” A look of confusion crossed over Haruhi’s androgynous features. And was there a hint of suspicion there as well? Clever girl. “What sort of request?”

“Nothing that will take too much of your time.” He remained standing, clipboard held under one arm. No need to draw attention by sitting beside her. “My family has secured a business deal with a prominent company in the States. There’s an event this weekend for it and I’m in need of accompaniment.”

“Oh? You should take Renge - she’d…”

“She isn’t the type of accompaniment I would like for this event,” Kyouya said, smoothly. He had all his arguments and reasoning planned ahead of time, ready to break out in the face of Haruhi’s protests. “I would hate for my family to get the wrong impression of the relationship between Renge and myself.”

“But…”

“I assure you, Haruhi, there is no way my family would assume the same of you.” Perhaps it was cold, but it was the truth. The name Fujioka meant nothing to his family - Haruhi would be seen as nothing but a pretty young woman that had caught Kyouya’s eye for the moment. Which suited his plans perfectly.

“I see.” Haruhi frowned slightly. “I appreciate the offer, but…”

“The rest of the club isn’t going to be in attendance. In fact I’d prefer if you didn’t mention this to them - I’d rather avoid their antics.” He cast a gaze to where Tamaki and the twins were arguing animatedly. No, they couldn‘t know about this. Tamaki would wail to high heaven and the twins… “And you would of course be required to drop your male act.”

“I haven’t said I’d go,” Haruhi mumbled. Kyouya smiled a bit, calm and composed and used to Haruhi’s reactions by now.

“I’d be willing to lower your debt considerably,” he said, one eyebrow raised.

“I don’t have anything to wear,” Haruhi said, bluntly, and he could tell she was putting out feelers. She was suspicious, and she had every right to be.

“That will be taken care of.”

“What are you up to, Kyouya-sempai?” Haruhi’s wide brown eyes narrowed some, almost shrewd. Kyouya simply smiled. He knew he had her now - she was too curious for her own good. And still no one had taken an interest in their conversation, no one had even so much as glanced at them. Kyouya’s smile widened some and he dropped the last bit of bait.

“I suppose you’ll have to accept my offer to find out.”

***

When one was wealthy, it was easy to get things done. Kyouya sat at his desk, idly browsing through various online boutiques and dressmakers. Yes, Tamaki would have his hide if the blond knew what was going on. Shopping for women’s clothing wasn’t exactly Kyouya’s idea of an evening well spent, but Haruhi would need something to wear. And something expensive and well made so as not to arouse suspicion or questions.

Haruhi’s suspicions only pleased Kyouya - she was not so naive as Tamaki and the twins liked to think. Certainly she was unobservant in matters regarding men and women, but there ended her naiveté. She was insightful and critical, with an eye for details and the working of the human mind.

And she knew him too well. That pleased Kyouya on a level. Haruhi already knew his ways, knew his measure. Or at least knew as much as anyone other than Tamaki could. She would be difficult to take by surprise - all the more reason for Kyouya to wish to do so. Intrigue and strategy fascinated him. Perhaps he was cold, to turn such a professional eye even to the game of romance. But it was who he was and he had no desire to change.

It was a simple thing to choose a gown for Haruhi, some expensive bit of tasteful design. The gift wasn’t intended to impress - she was not a woman impressed by displays of wealth. A simple but finely made piece was chosen, modest and in shades of soft green. It would be delivered to Haruhi’s door with a small note - a subtle reminder not to mention anything to the rest of the host club.

With that done, Kyouya turned his attention to other matters. Gaining Haruhi’s romantic interest would prove difficult - nearly as difficult as courting her without paternal repercussions. He doubted her brilliant mind and critical eyes would impress his father. Not without money behind it.

It presented a unique problem. As a commoner, Haruhi was in no position to be seriously considered a match for him. But were Haruhi to be suddenly blessed with wealth, she wouldn’t be Haruhi any longer. The entire thing was like a fascinating puzzle.

Kyouya’s cell phone ringing startled him out of his reverie. By the tone of the ring, he knew it was Tamaki who was calling. Closing out the windows on his lap top, Kyouya answered the phone.

Tamaki was in a state. Kyouya clenched his teeth together as his friend wailed and moaned, the subject of his distress Haruhi - as always. Tamaki had spotted her taking dinner with some other male student and had lapsed into fits right there on the street corner if Kyouya was any judge. Which proved how much Tamaki paid attention - Haruhi tutored her fellow classmates on Wednesdays. The student Tamaki was so worried over was simply Haruhi’s study partner for English, nothing more. But Tamaki saw threats everywhere…

Everywhere but where there were threats.

Oh yes, Kyouya needed to be careful. He assured Tamaki as best he could, cold and calculating as usual. He even went so far as to invite Tamaki over, to take his mind off things. He had to admit that there was a certain amount of thrill to the deception. But it was Tamaki’s own fault. Wailing and ranting and cowering under one’s feelings did no good. Letting opportunities pass by, unheeded…

Kyouya was smiling as he hung up the phone, a noise from his computer alerting him that the dress he’d ordered from Haruhi would be delivered the following day. Tamaki was on his way over, still in fits over Haruhi’s supposed date - none the wiser as to what was happening beneath his nose.

The pieces were falling into place quite nicely.
