RP, Dreams, My Dark Fic Past

Applications for [livejournal.com profile] landels_redux close tonight at midnight! Just a friendly reminder for those of you who've been thinking about applying this month but haven't gotten around to it. Apps will be open again next month, if you don't make it this time. :D You can check here to see what characters have been apped for already. And don't let the numbers intimidate you! The more the merrier!

This morning was hell for me. I woke up around three in the morning in excruciating pain. I'm happily doped up on medication for it now, which I'd like to think added to my dreams about me, Pyro, Magneto and Superman going on a crime spree to find three sacred gems. Superman was being mind-controlled by me, else he wouldn't have gone on a crime spree. Or let all those whales loose in the streets of Boston after he flooded it. Sawyer from Lost was in there somewhere, at a sleazy little hotel. But I probably would have had strange dreams anyway.

So, I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] ranchangrnl about fandom experiences and starting out in fan fiction. The first fics I wrote are long gone, swallowed by the great cavernous void of cyberspace. My Highlander Mary Sue series. My Babylon 5 Zack/Lyta schmoop. That's all gone. I have a printed out copy of one Babylon 5 fic, and a horrible Due South epic I once wrote. Why I saved these things, I'm never sure. Except that it's fun to go back and see how far I've come. And while those are gone, others still remain.

I come before you now to share with you the stories of my old fan fiction. The fan fiction full of cliches, purple prose and mary sues. Because I wrote it. I wrote it in the grand tradition of fanwit fiction. Back when I honestly believed characters that were half demon/half cat with wings and super powers were actually a good idea. Back when I saw nothing wrong with having an entire cast fall head over heels for my chaos demon reincarnated as a powerful sorceress - even though she was shagging the villain. I did it all. Super powers, amazing beauty, canon-warping, reincarnation-resulting-in-split-personalities (both of which were awe-inspiring and amazing, of course), animal bonding powers, the ability to save the soul of the twisted, power hungry villain...

There are two fandoms for which fics of this nature remain. The Halfblood Chronicles, and the Aladdin TV show. Yes, you heard me correctly. And if you're truly curious, I am willing to post these old fics here, so we can all look back and laugh. Because I'm not embarrassed of these god awful pieces of fantasy. They were a starting point, and I've come so very far in writing that it's nice to look back and remember where I started.

So come on folks! Share your stories of your embarrassing fiction! Share your tales of Mary-Sues, canon rape, ideas-that-seemed-good-at-the-time and everything else. Look back with me and laugh, and be thankful for those first stories that set you on the path.

Andre Norton's Halfblood Chronicles, or something else? I'd forgotten how much I used to adore those books (and I think if I found my high school notebooks, there'd probably be a few half-formed fanfics in there).

My personal horror is the 20-some odd part Mary-Sue Buffy fic I wrote, back when I was first dipping my toes into online fandom. I was a total newbie in every way (I was probably 14 . . . *cringe*) had never even had a computer before . . . I think I broke every rule of online fandoms before I even knew they existed. And I'm very, very glad that I no longer have any record of that fic. The heroine was (I think) Angel's natural sister, who had once upon a time been a Slayer but was either vamped or was actually an Immortal (see, I can't even remember if it was a crossover or not!). Spike liked her more than he liked Drusilla, even. It was awful. Three months later, I looked back and cringed, even.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! That would be them! Gah, I loved those books. I never did finish Elvenborn, though, as Kyrtian annoyed the hell out of me. He was just a wannabe Valyn, really. I have two god awful Mary Sues, and then a bunch of slashfic.

Oh god, that sounds both awful and awesome. And I hope it was a crossover, because that would make it even better. I think a lot of us in the older fan brackets broke many a fandom rule before we knew anything about them. Especially since it wasn't all laid out neatly all over the net, and people weren't likely to point out the inherent awfulness in fics like these.

HA HA HA HA! OMG! ^___^ I guess we all start out with funny fan fiction experiences!

Thank God I didn't write very often when I was younger...I was more into reading fan fiction than into the writing, probably because I was shy about writing something terrible and getting bad reviews. But my first story (it's thankfully in an old notebook in a dump somewhere right now!) written when I was 11 was Pokemon! Not just Pokemon...Ali Oak was Gary's twin sister, but she joined up with Ash and his friends after being attacked by a giant bug pokemon in the forest. Soon after that Brock and Ash fell madly in love with her, and she discovered her own psychic abilities. But then she was kidnapped by James from Team Rocket, because he secretly had a crush on her and wanted her all to himself! Yeah, and she fought with a Jigglypuff...

as if James even likes girls! XD

I never finished that one, and it was a few years until I tried fan fiction again. But then LOTR came out, and I started writing two page NC-17 FrodoxSam stories...yeah, not only were they PWP, I also lacked a basic understanding of male anatomy...ha ha, so when I see these 13 year old girls trying to write yaoi smut, I can comiserate. Because my first stories were terrible! >.< And I still can't write yaoi smut, even today.

Then I switched to Fushigi Yuugi, and decided it was due time for another fabulous Mary Sue. I was 15, too...no excuse! >.< I decided to write a story where I was the reincarnation of Nakago, and my boyfriend at the time was the reincarnation of Tomo...so I got to work in both the yaoi fangirlism and my little 15 year old fantasies....it was classic. The sad thing is, some of my Fushigi Yuugi stories are still on my ff.net account...not that they're much worse than the rest of the stories on that site, but anyways! XDDD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we do. And I, personally, think it's kind of fun to back and revisit them. :D

I wrote so much. Lots of it is in notebooks, but some is still online. Under different pen names, but still! Ah, Pokemon! Now there's a classic first-fic-fandom. Massive extra points for having James in love with her, because James is so clearly gay.

Ha! I have Sam/Frodo fics! Not NC-17, but I wrote a couple! And those are still on one of my ff.net accounts. I like to think they didn't suck, though. And oh god, yes. Early yaoi with no concept of things like lube. I was there. And it was awful.

Mary Sues can be fun. And they can be a real catharsis. I kind of want to write one, just for the hell of it. Because seriously... sometimes it's fun to let loose the imagination and go hog wild. And that does sound classic. You get tons of points for all of those! Isn't it fun to look back, and look at your stuff now and realize how amazingly improved your writing is?

[identity profile] momoiro-usagi.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, yes it is! ^___^ Even the stuff I wrote last year was pretty bad compared to what I'm writing now...it was so different, and the style was only mediocre. But it was a different fandom (Fruits Basket), as well, so that accounts for at least some of the difference! ;)

The biggest change I've seen in myself that I like to count as literary maturity is my shift away from fangirlism (especially yaoi fangirlism!)...I used to write stories because I thought they were hot, now I write them because I think they're interesting! ^^ So self-insertion is becoming more and more obsolete, thankfully! O.O

Mary Sues can be really funny, though. Sometimes I have these ideas for characters....like an alchemist who turns all the liquids in the body to ice! (No, not Iceman! XD) But then I realize I've created a Mary Sue and I think "wow, good thing no one can read my thoughts!" Ha ha ha! It's silly and embarrassing, but totally amusing too.

Ha ha ha, I know, so clearly gay! XD But I've had a fetish for gay men from a very young age! XD Somehow I think anyone who's written in the Pokemon fandom scores major points! Sadly I never tried YuGiOh, though my best friend [livejournal.com profile] _acerbitas_ wrote a 16 chapter SetoxJoey when we were sophomores in high school, and I thought it was the end all of great fiction at the time! LOL! She's since deleted it from her ff.net account.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the stuff I wrote last year isn't too bad, but it's not as good as my stuff now. That was when I was still writing in HP fandom. I never did write an Fruits Basket fan fiction. That I can remember, anyway.

Yeah, I think that's a very important step in the fiction writing process. Writing for character interest rather than 'ZOMG! HOT!'. The first stuff I wrote in Harry Potter was pure, horrible PWP. I mean... classic bad yaoi written by a naieve fangirl.

I do too! They're just idle thoughts, and I never do anything with them, but they're there. And some of my original Mary Sues have evolved and developed into characters I write in my original works. I have two that have stuck with me for years.

Ah, James. We love him so. I never wrote in Pokemon, I just watched and played it on my Game Boy. Didn't do YuGiOh either, but I started out before anime was big.

[identity profile] momoiro-usagi.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really strange with fandoms....sometimes I can absolutely love a series but I still can't manage to write in the fandom. That's how Harry Potter has always been for me, right along with YuGiOh, Gravitation, and Kingdom Hearts (though I might give that one a try at some point!)...sometimes I love something, but still can't feel any inspiration to write about it. I think some of it is the number of characters...there has to be a lot, because I like variety. But YuGiOh and Harry Potter have tons of characters, I just never could write them when I was younger!

...Which might be a good thing, because I've been spared from a history of bad Mary Sue duelists who are the reincarnation of Yami Yugi's many wives! >.< Have you ever noticed that some fandoms may produce bad Mary Sues, but other fandoms produce really bad Mary Sues?? The FMA ones aren't nearly as bad as the Fruits Basket ones, and nothing can top the Fushigi Yuugi ones...or those from any other shojo harem anime! >.< Oh my God!

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been writing? I seem like the least experienced writer here! I'm so glad I started writing at an older age....not enough time for naieve yaoi with no lube! ;)

*GLOMPS*

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not alone in the dark fanfic past. I have my share of Mary Sue (mostly gun mals), mutant characters, and smarmy lovesick fics for multiple fandoms. LOL I did Star Blazers (Space Cruiser Yamato) strip poker, vampire epics where I boasted Sex every six pages.... Not to mention those painful Tomorrow People tales where everyone became furries....

Fic's in the closet. Every now and then I get a few of theses out and laugh my arse off...

One in particular, my Battlestar Doctor Who Crossover based on the games I used to play with my best friend Janet... Where a mad scientist hide in the bowels of the Galatica and performed horrible experiments on crew members, and the worst punishment he'd get threatened with was being reported.....

Can you say...

OW

I stop there, none needs to know what else went on in the twisted minds of two adolescent children of the early 80s....

Re: *GLOMPS*

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so much fun to dig them out and laugh over them. Once there's enough distance between them, anyway!

Wow. I think that's one of the best ones yet, honestly. And that's exactly how most of my Sues and crazy ideas came to be. Ah, the things creative friends will get up to...

Re: *GLOMPS*

[identity profile] redrose999.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL

Janet and I had some real disturbing game ideas I turned into stories. But yes, Dr. Insane's lab was painfull...

Creative name eh?

LOL

[identity profile] climbatize.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
A chaos demon reincarnated as a powerful sorceress? Wow. XD

I used to write all kinds of Mary Sues. In Star Trek, I had a character plucked from her own world, impregnated with Spock's baby, and made into the captain of her own ship. And then, in the Harry Potter fandom, my best friend and I were both obsessed with Remus and Sirius, and so we sued ourselves. I was a Remus' girlfriend, a hawk animagus named TwitchHawk, and she was Sirius', a leapord animagus named TreeCat. And then she got engaged to Sirius (who was of course like I LOVE YOU SO MUCH) and drowned, and that's really what changed Sirius.

...Yeah. XD;

Also, your dreams are really hilarious. ^^

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. That was an Aladdin sue. And it only gets better. I think she had a pet unicorn, and everyone loved her, and she got pregnant but wasn't supposed to and used magic to bend the laws of reality to make it so and got a demon lord really pissed off...

Your HP sues win. Those are awesome. Seriously. And the drowning is the icing on the cake. Are those still around? Because I would read them.

[identity profile] climbatize.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
....*dead* Your character is great! I'd say she's pretty much the perfect model of a sue. XD As in, trolls would probably steal from your story to create their sues.

The HP-fic was compromised of a bunch of smaller stories, and I can't find them on my computer... they must be on my friend's, I guess. (The drowning part is here (http://www.angelfire.com/magic/bbsb/youkilledher.html), though).

...WAIT WAIT. My other friend was there too and she was an animagus of Nagini! I'd completely forgotten that part. And our real names were Aurora, Dalene, and Delrei. o___O

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Get this. I have fan art of her. I had my HS art friends draw her for me. I really should post her series. It was never finished, I don't think. She had the baby, but she had to give it up to the demon lord, or something, and her husband had to get it back....

Awesome, thank you!

HA! That's great. Those are some prime Harry Potter self inserts.

[identity profile] greedyslayer.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...Can't believe you ever did mary-sue. O_o

landels or not, I'll know tonight.... (Characters from Batman, Spider-Man, and Firefly?! *saw that updated list thing* Totally cool. ^_^ YAY! for Martel.)

My first fandom stories, I think you heard before, were in Bruce Timm's Justice League animated series; I did a few things solely on the unconventional ship of J'onn/Shayera, or just J'onn, or just Shayera--hell, I did a sorta, non-rhyming poem for JL! Looking back, I still like the poem, and most of the other fic, though it's interesting to see that I HAVE advanced; I feel my writing's...smoother now. Now, I'm slowly returning to that fandom: entered with a slash pairing for J'onn, putting him with Batman, going for a twisted, dark, yet sweet and sincere feelings; I was really proud of that one. ^_^ Then I've done a couple fics taking snapshots of just as friendship between J'onn and Shayera. (Should I explain some of the JL characters I've mentioned?)

And it wasn't FMA immediately after JL; I did some LOST, some Star Wars, some Buffy, some Phantom of the Opera, some Angel--THEN Fullmetal.

Your dreams sounds about as crazy as my other friend's.

I remember the Aladdin series. ^_^ It was GOOD....

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I wrote Mary Sues. Some of the Sue-iest Sues that ever Sued. :D

Alrighty, whatever you decide. :D

It's always fun going back and realizing how much you've improved. There are few things more fulfilling, I think, as a writer. Nah, no need to explain. :D

Fandom bouncing! I did that for a while, before I settled down some.

It was! And I have a ton of bad fan fic for it. I'm going to be posting some, to show everyone. :D

[identity profile] burningvigor.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You should post the Aladdin fic. Heeee.

I only started writing fanfiction when I was in ninth grade-- it was all original character stuff for me before then. So I never wrote anything too atrocious, I must say. XD

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Which one? I've got four seperate Mary Sues. One that spans an unfinished series of six stories.

You are very, very lucky!

[identity profile] burningvigor.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Something on the short side? XD So I don't have to read TOO much.

[identity profile] rogonandi.livejournal.com 2006-06-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote a blatant Gary Stu story for the Super Mario genre 6 years ago. It was a big book too, 120 something pages. People did like it, but looking back on it now, it's kind of embarrasing.

I don't generally ever write fanfiction or do fancomics anymore. Everything I do involves an original character, so I basically do original fiction now! :P

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. You wrote Aladdin fic. That rocks in SO many ways!! *cracks up* I think I wrote my first fanfic to... My Little Pony. When I was like 6. Because I wanted to be Megan. Or replace Megan. I can't really remember, hahaha. But when I first found online, it was to Sailor Moon and Ronin Warriors and later a Fushigi Yuugi-like universe. I think I did a few Ranma, too, and I believe I did a Gravitation one once, since I was all about the anime before stumbling across Harry Potter, which consumed my sould till about a year ago when I remembered how much I loved anime and how better it was, hahaha. ;) Well, in some ways *snickers*

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Mozenrath Sues. Every single one of them. I'll be posting them, due to popular request. :D

That's awesome! My Little Pony ruled. I always wanted to be a pony. A flutter pony, to be exact.

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
*snickers* That's so awesome, I can't wait to read, haha!

And I know. I was all about My Little Pony and She-Ra and Thundercats (I wanted to be the girl twin and I was in love with the boy twin. Umm. I didn't quite get the concept of twincest way back then, but I blame them for starting it) and a cartoon called Wildfire that was also about a horse and a girl that NO ONE I know remembers, haha, but it was my favourite. I made up stories in all of them that were terribly mary-sueish.

Embarassing fiction? Well, remember that show I used to talk about, the one that made me twitch every time Lisa Howard appeared on Highlander? Yeah, I wrote fic for that one. Really really bad fic. Including at least one sex scene.

I also wrote at least one Janeway/Chakotay fic, back in the dark ages before I realized that Janeway made me want to spork my brains out.

Happily, both of these were before I got a Livejournal. At one point, at least, the EFC fics were archived in a few places... fortunately, I expect that they vanished long ago into the internet-ether and the demise of my dad's old computer. *Relieved*

Oh yeah, and at one point early in college I wrote part of a Harry Potter Mary Sue fic. Fortunately, I was sane enough never to let the thing touch the internet, nor to ever show it to anybody aside from [livejournal.com profile] coramegan.

[identity profile] lucy-lupin.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've written myself into Robin Hood folklore o_O. In my defence, I was ten at the time.

[identity profile] tamerterra.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I remember my Digimon Sues. 31 in total, illustrated all, but I couldn't think of a plot. And I didn't know that fanfiction existed, so I was trying to turn it into Orig!fic.

... So glad I found out about fic before my GCSE English coursework was due in. *wince*
