15 Minute Ficlet

Fifteen Minute Ficlet! I haven't done one in a while, but this week's word really sparked off the plot bunnies.

Title: In Troubled Times
Pairing: Lily Potter/Alice Longbottom
Rating: PG-13 (no sex, but talk of it)
Warnings: Er... straight women slash?
Summary: During war, you learn to make do with what you have. Word under the cut.

Word: Fretful

The coffee had long since boiled over, the bathwater had grown cold, and the plate of biscuits remained untouched on the low coffee table. It was impossible to think, let alone go about normal evening activities.

“They probably won’t be home tonight…”

“I know. Bloody hell, Alice, it could be days! How are we supposed to do this? How do they expect us to make this work?” Lily Evans - no, she was Potter now - kicked at a low footstool, red hair coming undone from its loose tail to fall into her flushed face.

“Lily, calm down. You knew when you got married….”

“I know, I know. Things would be hard, war is on, he’s a brilliant flyer, Dumbledore needs the men, I know.” But that didn’t make things any easier. Stupid James Potter. Stupid war. Stupid Order, stupid marriage, stupid everything. “I don’t even know why I married him sometimes.”

“Lily! Don’t say that!” Soft faced, sweet Alice Longbottom seemed shocked at the idea. “You were in love, why else would you get married?”

“Because we’re young and stupid?” Lily threw herself down onto the couch, long legs stretched out and foot tapping against the armrest. “Oh, yes, I love him. But it was a stupid idea to get married now. We aren’t even out of school for three months. And now he’s off doing god knows what and he could get captured or mutilated or die. It all made sense a few months ago, ‘we could die any day, we should get married before we miss the chance!’ but… is it worse to end up a girl who didn’t get married or an eighteen year old widow? We could have waited. I’m not about to fall out of love with him. He waited this long, a little longer wouldn‘t kill him.”

“You’re just worried.” Alice’s hand was comforting in Lily’s hair, stroking and soothing. “He’ll be fine. They both will. It’s just routine, and Albus isn’t worried. It’ll be fine.”

“I don’t see how you can be so calm.” Lily was up and pacing again, never one to stay still for long. “We don’t even have sex, there isn’t any time. He’s tired or I’m tired or we both are. He’s off hunting Death Eater’s or I am or we both are. He’s working or I am…. You get the idea. This isn’t a marriage, Alice it’s…. I don’t even know what it is. It was stupid.”

Back down onto the couch. Sitting this time, head resting on Alice’s shoulder.

“It’ll get better. Things are bad right now, for everyone, nothing‘s normal. Frank and I… well, it’s not all roses either, but we’ll stick it through. So will you and James. Frank and I hardly ever see each other, at least you and James have that. He's a good man. Be happy of what you have." Alice glanced down, round cheeks flushing suddenly. "And when he comes home, you shove him against that counter, pull down his trousers and have your way with him. Tired or not. Works wonders, trust me.”

“I guess you're right…” Reluctant agreement on Lily’s part, with a small and wicked grin. “You and Frank have it good. Quickies and all. I guess we better get used to making do with what we have. And figure out something to keep us busy for the rest of the night.” She turned to press a kiss to Alice’s cheek as the other woman turned to speak, their lips meeting accidentally and unexpectedly. Married three months, it was the first time Lily could remember a mouth to mouth kiss since her wedding night. The two women sat, frozen, held together by the moment and the brush of lips on lips.

“Make do with what we have,” Alice said, quietly. Her lips moved against Lily’s, softly. The red haired woman just nodded, tense, without words. These were difficult times. Nothing was normal.

While Frank and James staked out Death Eater meeting places, Lily and Alice made do with what they had.

First off: that icon is very, very hot.

Now that that's out of the way. *clears throat*

Thank you! I wanted to sort of point out before the fic that it's not like they're having some torrid affair behind their husbands backs or anything like that. They both clearly love and are devoted to their husbands, but... well, things happen. Extenuating circumstances and all of that. :D Thank you for the feedback! I've never written Alice before, but a conversation I had with a friend of mine a few days back sort of put the idea in my head. :D
