Um... neither?? I've never got that analogy... it seems like something some pretentious philosopher came up with when he'd had a bit too much to drink.
But in a way, it makes sense. Am I reading something happy because I'm in a good mood, or am I in a good mood because I'm reading something happy? Is life imitating art, or is art imitating life?
Interesting. Maybe it's just a matter of perspective. I think in some respects art is an idealised vision of life or something that the artist wants to aspire to (even if it is negative and terrible and gloomy and groady). Is that what the person who said it meant? But do you or do you think fantasy writers and artists see what they do in life? I'm not sure sometimes.
Or maybe life and art are the same thing, just taken to different extremes. Along that same point I think you could argue that art is more pure than life or a purer form of it, because there's kind of a set number of influences on it. Life is an art.
And I'm probably the last person you wanted to comment, so I'll shut up now.
I think, since man is the creator of art, that originally art imitates life. Then other people see it, are impressed by it, and subconciously try to obtain it, therefore life imitates life. It's a vicious cycle of addiction :)) Anyway, I could go on about that all night.
