As Promised....

That Remus/Severus blurb I meant to write a few days ago, before I was driven to bed by the flu.

As everyone probably knows by now, Remus/Severus is one of my favorite pairings. And it's one that I think works very well. I've already gone on at length on why their differences make them so compatible, so today I'm going to talk about their similarities.

They're both outcasts, in their own way. Remus for his lycanthropy, Severus for his Death Eater status. Severus is a professor at Hogwarts, and I am rather certain that he wouldn't be able to get work anywhere else. Remus can't get work because of his condition. They're both 'left overs' from the previous war. We don't see too many other Order members or professors around their age. They have that history to bind them together.

They are both, in their own way, martyrs. Severus flaunts his spy status and the risks he takes to Sirius in OotP. He doesn't let it be forgotten the things he does, the way he puts himself on the line. He draws attention to it, he keeps it out there. Remus, in the opposite way, does the same with his lycanthropy. He goes out of his way to play it down, to act as though it's really nothing. But in doing so, he's drawing attention to it. He doesn't let it be forgotten either. In his little speech when he's leaving in PoA, he goes out of his way to downplay it but still inject this underlying sense of pity and patheticism, all the while promoting this 'oh-so-brave-and-resigned' persona.

They're both over-dramatic, but again in opposite ways. Severus is prone to screaming fits and displays of over-the-top hatred and anger. He threatens Harry with the very maximum of Hogwarts law, always promising the very worst. Even though the worst is extremely unlikely. Remus makes the most of things - again - by down playing them. The way he deals with Sirius, in OotP. He's overly-delibrate and seems to time his remarks and inerjections to have the maximum effect. In the Shrieking Shack, in his lessons with Harry, Remus is the exact opposite of Severus but the same ends. He is overly quiet, reserved, calm. He has the amazing talent of drawing attention to things and getting attention by acting as though he's doing the exact opposite.

They're also both rather secretive people. They have secrets, they have dark histories, and they have aspects of their personality that I'm sure they'd rather not have at all.

I know there's more, but I honestly can't think of it at the moment.

It's interesting that you wrote about their similiarities -- in the essay for [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto that I'll be posting tomorrow, I talked about how they seem like opposites on the surface, but they really are a lot alike, and I talked about them both being touched by Dark Magic, being secretive and guarded, and being outcasts. So basically, I'm in complete agreement with your points here. *g*
