First off, welcome and thank you to all of the people who've friended me in the past couple of days! *waves*

Second, I'm getting more plot bunnies after writing that Rei piece.

Mashira is one of my favorite characters. I know he's this tiny part, and he hardly does anything, but I think what we do see is very telling. First off, he has a symbiont. I highly, highly doubt that symbionts are very common. I could be wrong, since I've never read the text-novels, but they seem to be pretty special.

I am assuming he's one of the Barbarois. All signs point to that, and it seemed that Bengi and Caroline were too. It sure as hell looks like the Barbarois have a culture and society and code of honor all their own. Which brings me to my next point.

Caroline and Bengi were very obviously just doing a job. They were in it for the blood shed, and because of the Barbarois code. Mashira seemed legitimately concerned for Meir, and his safety. He flips out when Charlotte gets out of the carriage, thinking it's Meir, and he stays behind to get rid of the one obstacle that could be a threat. It was about more than just a job.

So, in short, Mashira/Meir bunnies.
