Writer's Block: Showing your pride

[Error: unknown template qotd]

This is sort of interesting, because I actually have taken to the streets in support of my causes. I am extremely politically active, I just don't talk about it much.

The first was to draw attention to illegal dumping of waste in the harbor, back in Boston. The cleanliness of the harbor has long been...an issue, shall we say. And the damage done to the eco system, animals and water quality is absolutely atrocious. Environmental issues are very close to my heart, and always have been. Local clean-up, green power, organic growing, species protection, etc.... I'm still involved in all of that today. All the fests I've done recently have been enviro-fests.

Obviously, it should go without saying, GLBT rights. I'd like to be able to legally marry my fiance without having to relocate for it. N and I have already been discussing a music fest for support of GLBT marriage, all proceeds going to the local Alliance to aide their efforts in making the dream a reality.

And medical marijuana, which is the big issue right now. Specifically, the latest bill which proposes to allow states to implement marijuana control laws without interference from the federal government. This is a huge freaking deal. And honestly, the way it should be. In the hands of the people, from state to state, without Big Brother policing the entirety of the country. It's a waste of federal money and resources. It lands thousands of people in jail with harsh sentences who do not in any way, shape or form belong there.

This is the thing that gets me. I cannot live a functioning life without medical marijuana. I've tried. My struggle with prescription medications and losing myself to my health problems has been long and arduous, and God's green herb has freed me from that. And yet, to get relief, I risk up to five years in jail. Because it's a federal crime. And I am just one of so, so very many. And we aren't all getting our meds from drug cartels, no matter what the extremists claim. I imagine there are those who do end up supporting drug cartels, but only because they have no other option. I'm in the lucky group, I can buy American farm grown. And everyone should be able to.

Will people abuse it? Hell yes. Just like they abuse everything else. But I trust in the state governments to implement safeguards and restriction policies as best they can and not to punish the majority for the scammers that will always exist.

Anyway, there's my soap boxing for the week.

I am totally with you on legalising marijuana :/

I will never understand why the people in charge don't see that if they legalised it, they'd not only be helping the people who actually need to use it, they'd be freeing up police time for more serious crimes, taking a lot of steam out of the sails of drug cartels by allowing it to be legally grown, making sure that at least people are getting stuff that isn't cut with anything else, and, if money is all they care about.... they can get tax revenue from it :/

Over here they've recently pledged to ignore the advice given by major studies and keep drugs criminalised. Never mind that countries like Portugal which have legalised drug use completely haven't collapsed because of that.

It's the stupidest thing ever. And shouldn't be the big huge deal that it's turned into. I hate to keep saying what a waste of money and manpower it is, like I'm throwing out pro-pot buzzwords, but it's the truth!

I've been following all the studies on Portugal closely. And Alaska, as they've decriminalized marijuana on a state level, at least. And so far, no toppling of civilization!
