On Music....
I honestly do like music from artists that are current and making music today. I swear I do.
I've been recently sort of paying a bit of attention to indie music. Indie folk, mostly, but I've had a couple of bands recommended and I discovered Portugal, The Man through last.fm and fell in love. And I've been getting here and there this weird 'but I thought you only liked music from dead people or whatever' reaction.
It's no secret that my heart belongs to the greats of the 60s and 70s. But I do like a variety of music! In fact, here is a list of current, actively music-making artists I absolutely love!
Cloud Cult
Dream Theater
Vienna Teng
Newfound Glory
Within Temptation
The Waterboys
Regina Spektor
Beck
Blitzen Trapper
Ghoultown
Cake
There! Ten articles of interest off the top of my head! I honestly have a ridiculously eclectic taste in music - quite obviously! - and it's a bit odd to realize that I apparently give this impression of being snobby about music. Which...well, I am, but not in that sense. I'm snobby when it comes to covers, sure, but that has nothing to do with chronology or bias towards beloved artists. I love Bowie's covers of Pink Floyd, but I would rather stuff my ears with anchovies than listen to his cover of 'Across the Universe'. However, I'm more likely to listen to Fiona Apple's cover than the actual original, and that's The Beatles. It's all about quality and what speaks to me.
I'll confess I'm more likely to be open to music from a couple of decades ago, but that's mainly because the mass produced widely consumed music I hear on the radio these days strikes me as empty and lacking. I can appreciate the efforts of certain current artists to return to a more classic age of musical entertainment, but those days are gone. Forget influences of days gone by, put some damn heart and soul into your lyrics and your composition....
Yeah, I don't know where exactly I was going with this other than 'I like lots of music!'.
I hope
husband_brother was able to catch up on sleep today.

I suppose it could be worse, though. I could default to Bob Marley...

I dunno, I'm inclined to agree with you. While I find older music great on the whole, there are some duds, and there are definitely some covers I prefer to the originals. As long as you stay away from what gets radio airplay today, you're fine, in my experience. *shrug*

Yeah, that exactly. And I can't think of a single song this year I've heard on the radio that I really liked, so... (I can dig some music for the beat and/or vocal talent of the artist, but the lyrics are just...blegh. And I needs me lyrics that speak to me.)
