Fandom Questions!

Yes, you read that right!

I've been out of the game for a bit, but recently dabbling. And I'm lost and confused. :(

1) When did Fanfiction.net institute this waiting period before uploading thing?

2) Are there any good, reputable archives for NC-17 and the like fic? I only really know AFF.net and...eh. I stopped being happy with that site while I was still in the Harry Potter fandom.

And before anyone asks why I don't just use livejournal...I have a couple of reasons.

The first is just that...I really don't like the weird social stuff involved in being a fic author on LJ. You post to comms, and people read your stuff, and then there's the whole friending thing. Which is awesome, and I have definitely made some amazing friends through LJ comms! But...I also ended up with an Flist I couldn't manage, and some really messed up self worth and value issues.

I know I posted a lot at the other journal about how I had weird issues about what people thought of me, and why they friended me, and my worries that I was only liked due to the things I wrote and did in fandom. LJ is the only place I've ever felt this way, and I've been active in fandom for about fifteen years now. Especially after dozens of those people who swore up and down that it had nothing to do with fandom...jumped ship after I left fandom. Which wasn't surprising, but soured me a bit. And it's not the people - it's just the way that LJ is set up.

I'm leery of posting in my own journal mainly because once I start posting fic, I'm honestly terribly worried I then just won't shut the fiddlesticks up about my epic fandom obsession. And I'd annoy the crap out of people. And I do not want to be That Person.

So...yes, this is why I'm looking into archives. :D

*perks ears* FFnet added what? I haven't uploaded there in forever. o.O

Apparently it's a spam reducing thing? When your account is activated, you can't actually upload anything. You have to wait a period of days. It's strange and new and I don't like change! *sits in rocker and waves cane*

Hi! You don't know me -- just passing through on friendsfriends -- but have you heard about Archive of Our Own? I've liked using it so far, and it's probably as fan-friendly as you can find right now.

No worries! Random droppers by are always welcome!

I actually have not heard much at all about it. No specifics, at least, just that it was a big archive. Hmm, I think I'll have to check it out, thanks!

There's always the option of making a fic journal to post from, or to, which keeps your fandom self separate from your personal stuff and keeps your own flist from exploding to unhealthy amounts with friending and whatnot.

[identity profile] cross-the-sky.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. This...is very true. I think I'm going to consider this option....

I have occasional bursts of genius! :D

[identity profile] cross-the-sky.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I so didn't even think of that! I just thought 'gah, LJ, personal space gah!'. And tried looking for archives. But I failed. And ff.net failed me, for the first time ever. *shakes fist at it*

Considering I'm trying to get GIMP working on my Mac so I can make a header for this potential fic journal....

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwahahaha. Whee fic! And HI HOW IS LIFE?! :D

[identity profile] cross-the-sky.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, maybe! New fandom, jitters, the usual. :D

IT IS NOT BAD AT ALL! Actually, other than crappy health recently, things are pretty good. :D

Man, I need a better variety of icons. WHICH I WOULD HAVE IF I COULD GET THIS STUPID PROGRAM WORKING!

[identity profile] chaneystarr.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, my journal went back to free since I don't use it much anymore so I don't have all that many to choose from either. XD

Which fandom are you venturing into now? :D

[identity profile] cross-the-sky.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on ads, and I've got space, I just...want icons I made myself. And can't make them because I still don't understand my Mac. :(

Um. A rather small game fandom that peaked about three years ago.

I'd definitely suggest getting a fic journal. You don't have to use it for anything other than posting fic, and people can just friend that for fandom updates, without any obligation of you reading them in return ^^

[identity profile] cross-the-sky.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the route it looks like I'm going. For those exact reasons!

I do recommend Archive of Our Own. I really like that place so far, and it's definitely NC-17 fic/slash/everything friendly.

Then again, I think I'm an archive whore since I have my own fic site, FFnet, and Archive of Our Own to upload fics LOL.
