Okay!

After many, many scans and a little Macguyvering, I think I have the virus and all associated files quarantined.

It only took me nearly 24 hours, but still. My browsers are running relatively smoothly now, all plugins are working, programs are loading, and Watari is tootling along as normal.

I did somehow lose all my bookmarks and plugin info in Firefox, but I can deal with that. I seem to have blanked completely on a couple of passwords - apparently I used different passwords for RW Valyn and CU Myre, wtf? - but those are easy enough to retrieve.

Hopefully this means crisis is over.

*crosses fingers*

Real updates coming later, when I'm sure my computer is okay.

Indeed! It may still be cold and icky and rainy, but hey, my computer works! :D

Yaaaaay!

I've been cursing out my computer too, since I just tried to reinstall Windows XP on account of still being none too fond of Vista... BAD IDEA. At least Vista is always happy to completely reclaim my system? It doesn't even punish me by losing my files!

(iTunes is another story, but OH WELL! ^^)

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, ouch, I have heard horror stories about trying to revert to XP from Vistas. :/ I hate Vista, so much.

I have a friend who could do it, easy, but I STILL haven't made him the necklaces I promised from the LAST time he fixed my computer... ^^ In my defense, it turns out velvet ribbon is damned near impossible to find in stores, but I try not to be a mooch.

Also, tag to Tamaki! I am evil and laugh in anticipation of him discovering another of his PTSD triggers.

What color velvet ribbon do you need? I've got a ton.

Hahah, thanks!

Oh, huh. XD Dark green and dark red. Genius that I am, I bought velvet cloth and then found out that's not how you do it. (Luckily it's cheap when you're buying an 8th of a yard at a time!)

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I know I have dark red, at least!

It might be too late, but it's worth giving it a shot: MozBackup (http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/download.php) can help recover lost Firefox information for you and retrieve it upon a reinstall. Good luck! D:

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's too late, sadly. Ah well, at least the only things I lost were online.

[identity profile] dragontrap.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
When I had my big Firefox blow up, it originally ate all of mine as well. As soon as I got things fixed and installed v2.0.0.17, all of my bookmarks came back. It may be just some glitch that is hiding your bookmarks from you.

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I lost everything that was stored online, sadly, both Firefox and IE, and my plugins and settings for media players and the like. :(

damn...

Have you thought about using Google Bookmarks instead of browser-based favorites? I find it horribly convenient--they're web-based, so they're accessible from any computer. Makes saving things really easy if you end up with nasty computer-munching virusy-things...

[identity profile] theladyfeylene.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm... not even entirely sure what Google Bookmarks are, actually!

I'm glad Watari seems all right again. I hope it keeps up!
