Con and Cosplay Planning - Getting an Early Start

Argh, cleaning. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. Today, I hate it. I'm finally tackling the damn bedroom, and I've cleared the floor. On one level, I know it doesn't matter that much. I'm only in there when I sleep, and no one else sees it but me. But there's this little voice in my head that says 'you're an adult, clean your damn room'.

Anyway, since I was thinking about cosplay and my next con - which will be PCC again - I decided to a) start planning my costumes and b) check the site to see what's up, when it is, etc.

Um. Holy crap, Wil Wheaton is a guest. I adore Wil Wheaton. I have since I was a much younger gal, hooked on Star Trek. And now I appreciate his writing and his brilliant mind. I've always, always wanted to attend a con where he was a guest, because I've heard nothing but how witty, friendly, and awesome he is. So I'm thrilled.

On to costumes!

I'm thinking, since it's Phoenix Cactus Comic Con, that I should do the comic costumes I've been planning. Which means:

Rose Red of Fables, in her 'Pirates of Upstate New York' ensemble. I get to make a cutlass! Needed Parts: Grey pants, red sash, white shirt with rose design, white rose choker, blue bandanna, cutlass, two pistols, short red wig.

Nico Minoru/Sister Grimm of Runaways. I honestly can't decide which of her outfits to do. I'm thinking the white shirt/black tie/maroon skirt from volume #11. That or the aristocrat-esque black jacket and maroon skirt with bandanna from #2-6. Either way, they're easy to put together/make, and I can use my real hair. I just need to go nuts with my extra-strength hair cement stuff to get the right spikes. And I'll have her staff, which is recognizable, so....

Suggestions as to which Nico outfit to do would be greatly appreciated! Black and White jacket outfit, best pic I could grab without being spoiled for the shirt and tie outfit.

I know I'm starting super early, but maybe if I start way in advance, I won't be rushed like crazy the week before. Six months should be enough time.

Right?

Bringing the non-spoilerificness!

Got (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/AttilatehBun/runaways/run966jp-1.jpg) a couple (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/AttilatehBun/runaways/RunawaysV21Teengirlsquad.jpg) of cool outfits (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/AttilatehBun/runaways/runawaysv2017page221ip-1.jpg) here, cropped so as to be non spoilery!

If any of those catch your fancy, I can dig up some more images, that's just a sample.

But no matter what, I vote no no no on the Miyazawa art costume. Anything but that! His art makes me want to kill myself in the face, and I don't want you to subject yourself to anything coming out of him. Especially when Nico has so many other awesome outfits. There's one later that is extra specially ridiculous, but I don't seem to have any scans of it. But seriously, three words: Gigantic. White. Hat. Omg.

(also if you want it (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/AttilatehBun/icondoit/runnicoheh.png))

As awesome as those outfits are, they are far beyond my capabilities as a seamstress. The reason I'm looking at those two outfits is because I a) already have the fabric I need and b) know I can do them. I know I can make ties, I can alter one of my giant blouses easily, I know I can make a jacket just like that (I have a freaking pattern for it, minus the lace and ruffles, which...I can do in my sleep), and the skirt is crazy simple.

That's what essentially it comes down to, for costume making for me. I might be able to pull together this one (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/AttilatehBun/runaways/run966jp-1.jpg), but I doubt it would be flattering on me. The same with the last one, which...um...kind of makes me drool. ;)

Yeah, I understand that. Especially on that second one. I can't even fathom where to begin on something that awesome/wack-a-doodle. Just trying to give you some more options. And hey, the third one, all you'd need would be a fitted white hoodie/long sleeved tee with hood, a red tie, jeans, and fishnets. You might not even need to sew at all!

But my vote's going for your first option. I think it'll be right up your alley with the whole shades of lolita thing (at least, that was the aim behind a lot of her outfits, that one in particular). Just say no to the second one. Also, why were you worried about spoilers for that outfit? Didn't you already read it? Or were you just looking for outfits in general and were scared of doing a full google search?

The third one, my main concern is...I so don't have the body for that. And probably won't, even in January. And I do love the second one, but I don't know how I'd do the main top. (Also, I think I'm a tad too hippy to pull it off right, with how low slung the sash and skirt are.)

Yeah, that's probably what I'll end up with. It's basically something I'd wear anyway, and I know how to make it, and I think it would look good on me. :D I've actually already got the fabric pulled out. :D

And yeah, it was just fear of being spoiled by a google search more than anything.

Wil Wheaton? :D Awesome! I definitely want to hear about that when you go. Also, I really like that first one, the black and white jacket. :3 I'm not familiar with the canon, so I don't think I can be much help beyond that, BUT YES. Don't see many people with actual comic costumes, so that's going to be awesome. ^^ Can't wait.

Yes! I kind of squeed and bounced when I saw that. :D Oh, there will be massive update! Yeah, the jacket one is one I really like, since...well, it's basically what I wear anyway. :D And I have a pattern for it.

I'm getting sucked back into comics hardcore. :D
