I don't think he did either. I think he thought he did, and I think a part him was all 'I shall die gloriously for my cause if all else fails!' but... yeah. he really wasn't thinking.

(Actually, according to Mercedes Lackey, there were plans to bring him back in the fourth book. But since it will never be written.... :/)
