Pretty much the only reason I want Subsistence is for the first two games. They have retranslated scripts and everything! (Thinking about it, this might not be a good thing because 'THIS IS BIG BOSS... WIND BARRIER IS EXTENDED ON THE ROOFTOP. LOOK FOR THE BOMBBLASTSUIT TO BE INTO THE BARRIER.' is one of my favourite pieces of writing in the whole series, but there you go.)
If you're nostalgic, it's really easy to emulate them. You should take a look at the MSX version of Metal Gear, because it's quite different to the NES version. There's also some incredibly big differences between the NES 'Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge' and the MSX Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which are caused primarily by them being completely different games.
Also, it's worth checking out the non-canon GameBoy Color game, Ghost Babel. It was basically a fanservice nostalgia game for people who liked 2D Metal Gear and didn't want to play the 3D ones, and therefore probably the best 2D Metal Gear made.
